§ WSSC Presses on in Ward 4, and Other Matters

By Cynthia Blaschke

With the destruction of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, and the terrible loss of innocent lives in the aftermath, it is very difficult to focus on our community's needs since we all seem to know someone who was affected in this horrific tragedy. With resolve, we can move forward and proceed with our everyday routines. I am very touched by the displays of patriotism in Riverdale Park with the presence of more American flags, and candle lighting in the neighborhoods on September 14. We need to stand united behind our country, and I encourage the display of our national colors during these trying times.

The Legislative Committee met August 30. Agenda items included:

  • General revisions to the charter and ordinances of Riverdale Park, including the present governmental form and the possibility of revising our governmental form;
  • Establishment of an Implementation Plan or guidelines for code enforcement;
  • Apartment unit inspections;
  • Adoption of more stringent code for signs - both permanent and temporary;
  • Mobile vendors utilizing business parking lots, especially during the weekends;
  • Redrawing of ward boundaries by multiple approaches prior to the next municipal election (2003);
  • Annexation of contiguous commercial and residential properties; and
  • Revisions to the truck parking ordinance based upon recommendations of the Traffic Study Committee.

I will be attending the Fall Maryland Municipal League Legislative Conference in College Park, October 18-20.

Cynthia Blaschke is the councilperson for Ward 2.
